High-Altitude Passes, Big Sky & Epic Climbs
The Rocky Mountain region offers the most dramatic and technically challenging gravel riding in North America. From Steamboat Springs' high alpine meadows to Utah's red rock canyon roads and Idaho's remote river valleys, the terrain here demands respect. Expect significant elevation gain, altitude effects above 9,000 feet, dramatic weather changes, and routes that reward riders with scenery that simply doesn't exist anywhere else.
June through September is the primary season, when high passes are snow-free. July and August are ideal for Colorado and Idaho. Utah's canyon country can be ridden April–May and September–October to avoid summer heat. Always check mountain weather forecasts — afternoon thunderstorms are common July–August at elevation. Acclimatize for 24–48 hours before big rides if coming from sea level.
